Maltbury used to hire out Metrodeck and Steeldeck Staging. We no longer do this but our experience in the stage hire business means that we understand why people often find that it makes more economic sense to buy our modular staging and Backdrape systems rather than hire them.
The first point to examine is the cost of hiring stage equipment which escalates quickly when you consider the transport charges. Sometimes the price of having equipment delivered and then collected again can exceed the value of the hire itself!
What’s more, you’re always at risk of losing a deposit if you damage hired kit. And on top of that hiring stage equipment limits you to certain designs and styles. But once you purchase staging equipment you’re free to alter or fix-up the kit as and when you like and there’s no deposit to lose!
People who’ve purchased equipment often find that they can use their decks much more than they anticipated, for example for smaller tasks which couldn’t have justified hiring in equipment. And you can save money by purchasing your core items and only hiring in the odd extras when you need them.
Backdrape customer Carolyn Simon initially called to hire staging equipment but purchased a Performance Backdrape instead. She recognised that “it was more profitable to buy a backdrop system just the once rather than repeatedly spending money hiring one in”.

Our Metrodeck and Steeldeck customers are putting on some great shows in June. With a bit of singing, bit of dancing, bit of laughing – what more could you want?!

It’s been a tough time trying to get to grips with the April Bank holidays! We’ve been thrown a bit by the schools’ Easter timetables all being out of synch with each other. Maltbury’s Brighton office won’t be open on the various bank holidays coming up so be sure to order your staging and backdrape accessories early to avoid delays on deliveries over the Easter and Royal Wedding weekends.
Order before the end of April to take advantage of our Easter Leggs offer! Free steel or aluminium legs with every Steeldeck or Metrodeck order!
Contact Staging Sales or Backdrape Sales now to make sure you get your parts on time and enjoy your bank holidays in peace!
The Maltbury Staging office is located in Brighton – one of the most vibrant performing arts cities in the country (in our opinion anyway). We’re actually based in New England House – an arts based office block designed to host local artists and businesses related to the cultural industry – the perfect place for us! It’s surprising there are no networking groups for the businesses here….maybe we should set one up…
Maltbury Staging is not afraid of pushing the boundaries. On top of redesigning our website to be more user friendly and regularly tweeting promotions and info for our followers, Maltbury have now ventured into blogging! Strange though it may seem compared to how business ran just a few years ago, our blog will become a focal point for theatre staging info and insight.
Philip Sparkes, our managing director and a man with years of theatre industry experience, will be providing his input as we discuss the movement from ‘stage blocks’ to the modern day stage deck, understand the technical lingo of the theatre industry, and offer helpful tips for stage management.
As a Brighton based business (and Chatham on occassion…) we’ll also be blogging local info such as the best places to eat around New England House! Such excitement to come!
We hope you enjoy reading and subscribe to our blog.
