Creative with Metrodeck - Hemsworth Arts and Community College

19th Apr 2010 - 12:56:21

After their most ambitious show to date, it's time to hear Hemsworth's story with Maltbury Staging's Metrodeck. I spoke to Stephen Foster, Assistant Principal at the school.

Why did you need the equipment originally?

We became a specialist peforming Arts College in 2000 and became very frustrated with the existing stage blocks which were over 20 years old and not up to the task of being used as often as we were starting to use them. The College does not have a fixed stage and the hall is used for many purposes so we needed to find a portable solution that was sturdy enough to take the usage we wanted but was stackable for ease of storage.

How has it changed the way you use the performance space?

When Phil demonstrated the system it was apparent that this could fit our needs. [We chose] modular 2m x 1m blocks with bespoke pieces, coupled with different heights using easily sourced scaff tubing. We were able to have a system that gave us the ability to perform front on, side and in the round as well as a formal stage for Awards Evenings etc.

What do you think are the benefits of using Maltbury’s modular equipment?

Simple but efffective fittings [all using] the same bolt sizes mean minimum custom parts for erection. Scaf tube legs mean multi height stages [can be] easily built and hard wearing ply surface takes screws easily for set construction when needed. When combined with the stairs and back rests, a sturdy and stable platform..[gives us] confidence in the product when external users using the hall etc.

And you've had a lot of bespoke equipment from Maltbury too..

[We] also selected Maltbury's equipment as it gave [Hemsworth Arts] the opportunity to design and build bespoke pieces..for specific productions. For example, for 'Shell Connections' we needed a rotating stage unit that was easily transportable but strong enough for actors to have confidence when performing. We needed curved back rests around which we could build a curved desk unit which was an important element in the latest production entitled "Runway". It was important that we had a firm foundation on which to build and the preformed metal handrails gave the structure that foundation we needed.

Enough about the products, has the Maltbury service been up to scratch?

Another important aspect of the Maltbury company is the advice and support available from the company. When embarking on a new project there is always someone at Maltbury able to help and turns thoughts into actual diagrams and practical solutions.

Finally, what’s your next show?

If the summer is half decent then the next usage of the stage blocks will come via "Hemstock" our own rock concert for students bands, a summer concert entitled "Dellebration 2010" as well as external bookings for the town council brass band concert and a summer dance show for the local dance school. We will not be deciding the September to March programme until June of this year.

Metrodeck information can be found here.

Thanks Stephen!
