Back in November, Stephen Gorton at Holy Trinity Church downloaded some product information from Maltbury's website. He was looking for a lightweight carpeted stage with drapes and had a fairly tight budget! It was decided that aluminium would be too expensive so a compromise was made using Metrodeck with a lightweight plywood top. I spoke to Stephen recently about his experience with the equipment and he was more than happy to answer a few questions:
Why did you need the equipment originally?
We needed to raise the level of staging for some events in which people at the existing stage sit down on chairs. Before we had the decks, anyone at the back of the audience would not have been able to see them clearly above the heads of those in front. On occasion, we have also run out of space on our fixed stage and have been forced to use the floor for musicians, etc..
Our Questions events (run 5 times a year) use the decks almost each time. We ran a Praise Party recently for 8-12 yr olds and used the decks to extend our stage and provide a drum riser. We have also used them during Sunday services to increase the visibility (by raising the height) of those on the stage. Since we now have the decks to use, we are finding more ways of using them than we first estimated.
Yes. Two people is enough to set out the staging as necessary. The carpet top is clean and presentable, perfect for our requirements.The drapes add a nice finish to the decks.
We like the modular approach because it allows us to make up a stage according to the size and shape we need. Already we have had events that needed two smaller stages. Crucially, we wanted the ability to extend our current fixed-stage at the front of the main church sanctuary. This could only be done by resting one edge (with short legs) of the staging on the top step and having longer legs at the other end to maintain level. We may also use it in the future for providing raked staging for a choir if necessary.
