In the Night Garden is a BBC children’s TV series about a magical place that exists between waking and sleeping in a child's imagination. The live show is produced by Minor Entertainment and has been touring the UK for the last few weeks. Maltbury Staging was chosen to provide the seating tiers.
Kate Mason, Maltbury Sales Manager speaks to Pat Molony, Project Manager:
The brief was to design a seating [tier system] that would be child-friendly. [They didn't want] standard theatre
seating where children would not be able to see past the head in front and be trapped in the [seating] row; one that would give a freedom and flexibility.
We had to try to take account of audience number and speed of construction. The shape and heights of the curved dome structure of the tent caused difficulty. We had to use the wire
frame 3D computer models to see if the seating would fit into the dome and Maltbury modelled the seating to fit within this framework.
We asked a number of companies and it was felt that Maltbury gave a very reasonable quote, in the right time frame and came up with a good solution to the problems facing us.
It allows us to set the seating up in the time allowed and travel in as few trucks as possible.
All the seating stand was bespoke. The staging was stock items.
Yes. [The system] works very well. Any difficulties that we have hit have had a lot of time from all sides put in to find a solution.
It looks likely that we will be doing quite a few more of these as markets and opportunities are opening up worldwide for In the Night Garden Live.
